“You’ll be amazed at how much interesting history can be displayed in an old Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe boxcar!”
— Judyth Shamosh, Volunteer Museum Curator
A museum in a boxcar? Yes!
The interior of the AT&SF Boxcar underwent extensive renovation by volunteers in 2017. In 2018, all new exhibits were designed and installed to celebrate the rich history of the Magdalena area and highlights three fundamental aspects of Magdalena's history: mining, the cattle drive, and the railroad.
Current Exhibits: Mining exhibit with a faux-rock mine entrance, information and historical photographs about the town of Kelly, the miners who worked in the mines, carbide lamps, and the mineral-ore smithsonite. Magdalena Stock Driveway exhibit with information about the significance and history of the longest used stock driveway in history in addition to information and historic photographs about chuck wagons and how they supported the cowboys on the drive. Maggie Steam Locomotive and Railroad exhibit with tools, information, and historical photographs on the importance and history of the railroad that supported the mining and stock driveway.
